Radiation therapy is the best known treatment for the prostate cancer and been used since last many years. The oldest form of prostate cancer radiation treatment is the electron beam, but today there are much advanced versions used such as proton beam therapy, 3D-CRT etc.

Radiation therapy kills the prostate cancer cells or stops them from dividing and growing, using the high levels radiations. The prostate cancer radiation treatment is broadly classified into two types:

(i) External therapy- In the external radiation therapy the radiations are produced from a device outside the body and aimed right at the prostate. External radiation therapy is often referred as radiotherapy and has been in practice for longer than brachytherapy

(ii) Brachia therapy – Brachia therapy is done by placing the radioisotopes into the cancer-infected area through thin plastic tubes. In the internal radiation therapy the radioactive sources is implanted directly in the tumor. This implant can either be temporary or permanent according to the stage of cancer.
